Context

We are Sustaain, a data-for-sustainability startup building a sustainability intelligence platform for complex supply chains such as coffee and cocoa with an initial focus on data management for European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance and risk management.

Over the next 6 months, we’re shipping production-grade compliance workflows: portal UX + APIs, traceability + geospatial services, auditability, and document ingestion & automation as a first-class module. This sits at the heart of the unified compliance operations vision we’re building with large commodity traders.

Role Overview

We’re hiring a Chief of the Unknown.

This is our role for people who don’t fit neatly into a box — but consistently get things done. You may be product-leaning, data-leaning, ops-leaning, or all three. What matters is that you can take messy problems, create clarity, and ship outcomes.

You’ll join as a high-trust generalist working across product, engineering, data/science, and delivery. Your mission will be defined by what is most urgent and most valuable — and will evolve as the company evolves.

What you’ll do (examples, not a checklist)

Depending on your strengths and what we need most, you might:

• Turn complex client and regulatory needs into shippable workflows: scope, acceptance criteria, edge cases, QA plans, UAT readiness.
• Own “last mile” delivery problems: unblock teams, coordinate releases, write playbooks, make go-lives smooth, reduce chaos.
• Build internal systems that make us faster: templates, tooling, automation, operational dashboards, documentation, runbooks.
• Investigate and prototype new product modules or integrations, then hand them off to engineering once proven.
• Help structure our approach to data quality and auditability: evidence packs, decision trails, reviewer workflows.
• Jump on whatever is burning (and make sure it doesn’t burn twice).

You are

• A doer with strong written communication: you create clarity and momentum.
• Comfortable with ambiguity: you can define the problem, measure success, and iterate fast.
• Structured but pragmatic: you know when “good enough” is right — and when it’s not (compliance).
• Able to work with engineers and data/science folks without needing translation layers.
