Context
Sustaain is a data-for-sustainability startup building a sustainability intelligence platform for complex supply chains (coffee, cocoa), with an initial focus on data management for European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance and risk management.
Over the next 6 months, we’re shipping production-grade compliance workflows end-to-end: portal UX + APIs, traceability + geospatial services, auditability, and document ingestion & automation as a first-class module. This sits at the heart of the unified compliance operations vision we’re building with large commodity traders.
Role Overview
We’re looking for a Fullstack Software Engineer to help us ship and scale these workflows from UI to backend.
We already have commercially viable endpoints and workflows built with our data/science team. Your mission is to turn them into reliable, maintainable, user-ready product: improve the portal experience, harden APIs, strengthen integrations, and raise quality across the stack.
You will report to our CTO and work closely with product, science, and delivery. This is a high-ownership role with direct impact on what clients use in production.
Responsibilities
- Build and iterate on the client-facing portal: UX flows, role-based access, data review and correction journeys, audit trails, and admin tooling.
- Develop and maintain backend services and APIs (Python/FastAPI today): performance, reliability, observability, and clean interfaces.
- Productize data/science workflows into production-grade services (APIs, batch jobs, orchestrated pipelines): versioning, monitoring, error handling, retries.
- Implement secure and scalable ingestion and processing patterns for traceability, supplier, and geospatial datasets (with data engineering).
- Own end-to-end delivery quality: tests, code review, CI/CD, environments, release discipline, UAT support, go-live and rollback plans.
- Work with product/delivery to define edge cases, failure modes, and operational requirements (this is compliance, not content).
6-Month Outcomes (what “good” looks like)
- A portal that users rely on daily: clearer workflows, fewer manual steps, faster investigation and resolution of data issues.
- APIs and workflows moved from “works” to “production-grade”: tested, monitored, documented, and scalable.
- Predictable releases with operational discipline: dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and lower incident rates.
- Cleaner interfaces between portal ↔ APIs ↔ data services ↔ client integrations, with fewer hidden dependencies.
